1. Select the Appropriate Template
Go to the Template section and select the Square Takeoff Starter Package
Scroll down to the Finished Carpentry starter package.
Within this package you'll find:
Base Trim
Chair Rail
Crown Molding
Door Casing
Window Sills
All of these are linear assemblies, except for Door Casing, which is a count assembly.
2. Configure Template Settings
Click the downward arrow on a trim folder (for example, Base Trim) to see the available trim types.
Make your selection, then click the green arrow to configure it:
Linear name
Linear description
Linear width (how thick the line appears on your blueprints)
Linear color
It is not recommended to change the linear type, as this is specific to the parts within the assembly.
Click Save and Go to Parts.
3. Go to Parts
For Linear Assemblies (Base Trim, Chair Rail, Crown Molding, Window Sills):
Add your cost each (typically priced per linear foot).
Add a markup (for example, 30%).
Optionally, add a location and adjust your waste percentage.
Click Save.
For Door Casing (Count Assembly):
Each part includes a total linear footage of casing per door — adjust this based on
door size.
Apply the number of sides.
Add your cost each and a markup (for example, 30%).
Click Save.
4. Perform the Takeoff
Linear Assemblies:
A single click drops a node.
A double click temporarily pauses the measurement.
Trim Around Doors and Windows:
If you're running the same trim around a door or window:
Hold L on your keyboard and drop a node, then enter the height of the door.
Continue through the door.
When you reach the other side, hold L and drop a node.
This is called the drop feature. It's typically used for electrical and plumbing takeoffs, but works the same way here for trim wrapping around doors and windows. When you reach an opening, double click to pause, then continue on the other side.
Using a Different Trim Around Doors:
If your doors use a different trim than your base trim:
Create a new assembly and give it a title (for example, "Door Trim"), then click Save and Go to Parts.
If you need to identify a different type of trim, click OK, then click Edit to change the part name. If you change the part name, also update the part number so it's correctly identified in your reports.
Add your cost each (per linear foot) and your markup, then click Save.
Hold L and drop a node, add the height of the door, then move to the other side, hold L, and drop a node.
For interior doors with trim on both sides, repeat the process on each side: hold L, drop a node, move to the other side, hold L, drop a node, then double click to move to the next door.
For doors with trim on one side only, hold L, drop a node, then move to the other side, hold L, and drop a node.
You can use this same drop technique for windows by creating a new assembly based on the same process.
Door Casing (Count Assembly):
Once your part settings are saved, measuring is a simple drop on each door.
5. Finish Measuring
Click Stop to end the takeoff.
6. Generate Reports
Navigate to Reports → Estimate.
Review your total linear footage for each trim assembly and door casing.
