What is Subtract From Area?

  • The "Subtract From Area" tool lets you subtract areas from an existing area measurement. Making it easier to remove areas after the application of the measurement rather than having to segment or break your measurements up as you go. It's especially useful for elevation plans (e.g., siding), floor plans (e.g., flooring), and countertops.

How to use Subtract From Area

Step 1: identify the area measurement you would like to subtract from.

Step 2: Go to "Tools" and select "Subtract from Area".

Step 3: Left click within the area measurement you are subtracting from. click as if you are applying an area measurement. Simply double click to finish and you will see the area subtracted.

Subtract From Area Pro Tips:

  1. You can use "Box Mode" with subtract from area. This is a great way to quickly remove areas by clicking and dragging, rather than clicking each point of the area.

  2. You can copy and paste your subtract from areas. Simply click the area you subtracted. you will see if highlights this measurement with a dashed blue line. Go to "Options" and select "Copy", then select "Paste"

  3. You must click within the same area measurement when using the "Subtract From Area" tool. A common issue arises if you’ve measured an area as two separate instances; in this case, you’ll need to use the tool to subtract from each measurement separately.

  4. To edit your subtracted areas, you must engage the area measurement layer first. Simply select the layer on the left hand side within your page list. Then click on the subtracted areas you want to edit.
