Overview
This guide will help you apply a roof rafter system using the Joist Tool. The process is similar to applying a floor or ceiling joist system, with the key difference being the setting of a pitch for the roof rafters.
Key Steps
Set Up the Area
Open the Area Tool:
Go to the top left of your screen and select Area.
Name the area (e.g., "Roof Rafter Layout").
Choose Measurement Type:
Ensure you select Standard Area as the measurement type. This prevents overlaying the roof area twice.
Select a Color:
Choose a light color that contrasts well with the rafters for clear visibility.
Draw the Measurement:
Click Start and outline the roof area by following the dotted lines on your plan.
Use Ortho (press F2 or enable in options) to ensure straight lines.
Complete each roof section independently, especially where rafters meet at hips, valleys, or ridges.
Apply the Roof Rafters
Select the Area:
Choose the area where you want to apply the rafters.
Configure the Joist Tool:
Go to Tools and select Joist Tool.
Change the System Type to Roof System and configure the following settings:
Material Manufacturer: Select General.
Joist Catalog: Choose the appropriate material, e.g., 2x6 roof rafters.
Material Length Calculation: Typically, select Nearest 2 Feet.
Material Direction: Set the direction according to your plan.
Pitch: Set the roof pitch, e.g., 7-12.
Minimum Material Length: Set to 8 feet.
Maximum Material Length: Set to 16 feet.
On-Center Spacing: Choose the spacing for your rafters.
Include Rim Board: Select and specify the appropriate material.
Color: Choose a contrasting color for the rafters.
Save Settings as a Template:
Save these settings as a template for future use (e.g., "2x6 Roof Rafters").
Apply the Rafters
Start the Application:
Click Start to apply the rafters. The tool will automatically calculate and overlay the necessary materials.
Review the Legend:
The Roof Rafter Legend will display the material sizes and quantities required.
Adjustments
Modify Rafters:
To adjust rafters (e.g., for a staircase opening), engage the relevant layer and modify the rafter placement as needed.
Add Additional Rafters:
Use Copy and Paste options under Tools to add or adjust rafters.
Review and Manage Costs
Check Material Quantities:
Review the material quantities in the Estimate Report tab.
Adjust Costs and Markup:
Adjust costs and markup in the Parts Catalog before applying the rafters, as these cannot be changed afterward.
